About the Overlay Timeline

The Overlay Timeline is a reverse-chronological record of headlines, lawsuits, and commentary about accessibility overlays and the companies who make them.

The maintainers of this resource aim to present events fairly, but acknowledge that it's impossible to be completely unbiased. The goal is to provide a clear view of the long history of controversy surrounding accessibility overlays, given the storied history of unfair and misleading practices (and harmful consequences) associated with them.

The history of these products and services speaks for itself. Any commentary or subjective framing is simply additional context on a situation these misguided companies have created themselves.

We will make every effort to verify sources, add citations, and maintain an archive. The secondary purpose of this resource is to ensure that none of these events are forgotten.

Due to the way some events may be connected, or how certain individual events may lack vital context on their own, not every single event has its own entry on the timeline.

If you feel that something has been missed, get in touch.
